Photo – A big thank you to volunteers, John and Linda Wittrup for helping the District with the big job of planting annuals! Here they are last week filling planters at the Clubhouse. This year, to fill the beds and planter through the District, staff purchased 42 flats of annuals from the DeKalb County Community Gardens’ Walnut Grove Vocational Farm. Thank you for the beautiful healthy plants! They will be enjoyed by many park users – as well as Sycamore’s butterflies and bees :)

Photo – A long overdue project of renewal and remembrance is underway at the District, this week. The landscaping around the William McAllister Memorial stone outside the Golf Course Clubhouse had overtaken the stone, nearly covering the plaque. Now staff is working on clearing out some of the existing foliage and establishing smaller shrubs and grasses to compliment this special memorial. Mr. McAllister was instrumental in the establishment and early success of the Sycamore Park District and in 1923 he became the first president of the Board of Commissioners.

The excitement surrounding Sycamore Park District’s highly anticipated ACTION 2020 projects is gaining some real momentum! Today, demolition of the house and outbuildings that stand on the future recreation campus site has begun. “We anticipate the community will be excited to see some movement on the site,” says Ted Strack, Sycamore Park District Board President. He adds, “our volunteer committees, Board and staff have been working hard behind the scenes however, this is the first physical change onsite and evidence that construction is imminent.” To read more and view the schematic drawings, click on the links below.

Photo – Congratulation Sycamore Pool Lifeguard of the Week, Tyler Hull, for setting an example of exemplary leadership and service. Tyler’s favorite thing about Sycamore Pool is all of the people he gets to work with. His favorite aquatic animal is “definitely a dolphin” and if he could have a superpower it would be telepathy.

Photo – 131 trees of 7 varieties are being planted throughout the District this week and next. Last winter, the Park District awarded a bid to Alaniz Landscape Group to supply and plant new trees in an effort to offset tree loss from the past several years. Through planned conservation, many trees have been removed due to age, damage or poor health. Even more have been taken down in a preventative effort to slow the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle. While every tree is valuable to Sycamore’s plant, animal and people communities, some of these new plantings are extra special Memorial Trees – dedicated to a loved one or event. If you would like to learn more about the memorial tree program, visit http://www.sycamoreparkdistrict.com/memorailtrees.

Photo – Each Friday, the Pool Manager honors a lifeguard who has shown exemplary leadership and service. Congratulation Sycamore Pool Lifeguard of the Week, Lilia Edwards! Lilia’s favorite thing about Sycamore Pool is swim lessons. She says the kids are a blast to teach and they are what help make the job so much fun. Her favorite aquatic animal is a dolphin and if she could have a superpower it would be super speed.
