Property tax assessment for property owners in all townships in DeKalb County except Sycamore and Sandwich townships will appear in Wednesday’s edition of the Daily Chronicle.
Property owners then have 30 days to appeal the assessed property value. If the township assessor declines to change your assessment, the next step is to file an appeal with the Board of Review and Appeals. Appeal packet forms are available on the County’s website in two categories: Commercial Property Appeals and Residential Property Appeals. Completed forms must be printed and mailed or delivered to the DeKalb County Assessment Office at 110 E. Sycamore St., Sycamore, IL 60178.
Property owners in the corporate boundaries of the City of DeKalb might expect their property values to have declined 9.12% from their 2012 assessment, according to staff projections contained in the backup material for the Nov. 12, 2013 regular city council meeting.
The council will consider a staff recommendation to increase the City’s property tax levy for Jan. 1, 2014 through Dec. 31, 2014 from $0.791 to $0.877 per $100 of Equalized Assessed Value (EAV).
A home assessed at $200,000 in 2012 paid $527.33 of their property tax bill to the City of DeKalb. If the assessment on the same house was lowered to $181,760 (a 9.12% decrease) in 2013 the city’s portion of the tax bill will increase to $531.35 (an 11% increase).

“This business of borrowing and raising taxes makes no sense at all once we know what these special funds are hiding in the CAFR.” … “If they are going to pretend they don’t have any money, I guess we have to point it out to them.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pRPBKJQnyU
Just proves that no matter how much the value your property drops our local government can and always will adjust the levy to get just a little more than they got from you last year. They have to, they have all this debt plus all of the new debt from recent and upcoming projects coming due and really the way you must look at it is that each property owner, like it or not, has cosigned all of the borrowing and spending. Keep spending city hall, keep spending!
