Several tornadoes ripped through parts of northern and central Illinois late Sunday morning to leave a trail of destruction that included leveled homes, overturned cars, several dozen injured and at least five fatalities. Sunday was the first F/EF4 November tornado on record in the state of Illinois.Violent tornadoes have struck in Illinois in December (F4 on Dec. 18, 1957 in Murphysboro).
In Illinois on Sunday Nov. 17th, according to the Weather Channel, there were tornadoes in the following Illinois towns:
1.Washington, Ill. – Rating: EF4 with estimated peak winds up to 190 mph. An estimated 400 homes were destroyed
2.Gifford, Ill. – Rating: EF3 with estimated peak winds up to 140 mph. An estimated 400 homes were destroyed.
3. Coal City/Braidwood, Ill. – Rating: EF2 in Coal City. Estimated winds 122 mph.
4. New Minden, Ill. – Rating: EF4 west of New Minden. A small farm sustained a direct hit with only the foundation of the home remaining. Estimated winds at least 166 mph.
5. Pekin, Ill. – Rating: EF2 with estimated winds up to 120 mph.
