On Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014, the City of Sycamore was informed that the Sycamore Fire Department was awarded a federal grant in the amount of $384,750 for the purchase of a replacement fire engine through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. The AFG program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperatin with the U.S. Fire Administration.
The $384,750 grant to the Sycamore Fire Department will be used to purchase a preplacement structural fire/rescue engine. The vehicle will serve as a front line engine with the current front line engine moving to reserve status to replace an engine tht is over 35 years old.
The grant award of $384,750 represents 95% of the total estimated cost ($405,000) of the replacement engine. The City is responsible for the remaining 5% of the cost of the new engine which will be approximately $20,250.
The Fire Department plans to finalize the vehicle bid specifications for the new fire engine int he near future and will advertise for bids or request for proposals (RFP) within the next few months. Once a fire engine contract is awarded by the Sycamore S=City Council, it will take at least 9 months before the new engine is received.

The FY 2013 Assistance to Firefighter Grant Funding had an appropriation of $640 million with $320.3 million to support Fire and EMS Operations and Safety Grants, Firefighting and Emergency Vehicle Grants and Fire Prevention and Safety Grants.
