NIU’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Week committee is now accepting nominations for the Dr. MLK Jr. Awards.
The award winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 22, at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. NIU Presidential Breakfast.
Members of the campus and the community are invited to submit nominations for these prestigious awards. Nominations will be accepted through Monday, Nov. 23.
The NIU Rev. Dr. MLK Jr. Celebration Week Committee, led by the Center for Black Studies, started planning work this summer for the annual week-long celebration that takes place in January.
Awards will be given to students, staff, faculty, alumni and/or university community residents.
Outstanding Community Service. Awarded to a faculty or staff member who makes significant contributions to the DeKalb County community through their time, actions, talents and dedication (outside any work done for their employer) within the last 12 months. The nominee selected should serve as a role model for compassion and service. The nominee should have a passion for helping others in the DeKalb County community.
Communiversity Leadership. Awarded to a community member and/or alumni who has brought the NIU and DeKalb County communities together in the last 12 months to advance President Baker’s vision of communiversity by furthering collaboration between NIU and the community resulting in tangible outcomes that increase quality of life for students and residents.
The P.E.A.C.E. Award. Honors King’s Jr. religious and secular legacy. The recipient of the P.E.A.C.E. Award is a current NIU student who embodies the contributions in the areas of Perseverance, Equality, Achievement, Community and Excellence.
