National Cheeseburger Day!
It’s National Cheeseburger Day! DeKalb County’s favorite sandwich is honored on September 18th with a slice of cheese. How did the cheeseburger become so famous? One or the earlier reports suggests that Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop, The Rite Spot.During an experiment, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger. A trademark for the name “cheeseburger” was awarded to Louis Ballast of the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, Colorado circa 1935. In more modern times, restaurateurs have added mushrooms, bacon, avocados and many other toppings. There is nothing better than a plain cheeseburger, OK – throw in some salty fries.
