Statement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation: “Special Agents and other personnel from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with agents and officers from federal and state law enforcement partners, are at the Northern Illinois University (NIU) campus today to execute a search warrant. The search warrant is associated with an ongoing criminal investigation being conducted by the FBI, Illinois State Police, U.S. Department of Education Office of Inspector General, and Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General. Today’s activity is not in response to any public safety concerns, and during the execution of the warrant, the public safety functions of the NIU police department will continue uninterrupted.
No arrests have been made nor charges filed with respect to the investigation. Due to the ongoing nature of the matter, no additional information is available at this time.”

I appreciate the efforts of the FBI notifying the media about the activity and the university’s efforts to ensure that folks on campus knew it was not a safety issue.
The next time, however, could someone please tell the Chicago media to keep their traffic helicopters back in Chicago watching traffic? Nothing reminds me more about 2/14 more than the vulture media helicopters circling DeKalb, not ambulances or fire trucks or police cars–those vehicles all have their place and they belong here. It is the news media’s helicopters. They do not belong here–they are out of place. The news helicopters are here just to sensationalize the story. The helicopters were here on 2/14 and again for the fake bomb threat shortly afterward. The news helicopters are not here to help people like first responders. The helicopters are not there to tell a story like regular reporters. They are just the ‘Hollywood’ portion of journalism.
I was home sick today and hearing the news helicopters circle was very disturbing.
