Local businessman Michael Embrey has announced his intentions to file for the position of Mayor of the City of DeKalb, Illinois. Michael Embrey is a 40 year residence of DeKalb and for the last 30 years a business owner and entrepreneur in the city. Prior to starting his own business he was the Show Band Director at Northern Illinois University and worked with former NIU President William Monat on Public Relations. During his tenure at NIU, he was active with the NIU Huskie Club.
Embrey is well know for producing special events through out the nation as well as several local special events and activities in DeKalb County (Kishwaukee Fest Parade, Baconpalooza, Drum Corps Shows, Military concerts at the Egyptian, Hopkins Park and DeKalb Airport and other events).
He has been involved in local political activities including serving and chairing former Mayor Greg Sparrow’s ‘Special Events and Tourism Committee’. He served 12 years on the DeKalb Liquor Commission.
Embrey serves on three organization’s Board of Directors, holding an officer position with two of the Boards.
He is a United States military veteran, serving four years with the US Air Force on assignment at the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He reached the rank of E5 and received several accommodations including the “Presidential Outstanding Unit Award”. He is currently a member of four Military Veteran organizations and is Executive Director of Sweets4Troops.com.
Embrey is a graduate of Northern Illinois University and holds two degrees from NIU (BMEd and MSEd).
He has formed an advisory committee of local citizens, including business owners, 3 former mayors, a former city manager, a former city clerk, and organizations.
