Book Bedazzling

Grief Support Group

Join others going through grief and loss and receive support in a safe and confidential setting with facilitation from the Family Service Agency of DeKalb County. In this ongoing grief support group, you will have the opportunity to share your experiences with grief, receive insight from peers and the facilitator on the grieving process, and learn more about grief. This group is open to adults experiencing grief from any loss, no matter where they are on this journey. A virtual option to attend this session is also available. Visit dkpl.org for the meeting ID in Zoom to attend. This grief support group does not replace other mental health services. If you need individual counseling or other mental health services, call 211 to find support in your area. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or need immediate attention for a non-life-threatening mental health need, please call 988. Nellie Bly: Around the World in 72 Days

Born Elizabeth Jane Cochran (1864-1922), this pioneer of investigative journalism is better known by her nom de plume, “Nellie Bly”. She became famous for her exposé of the New York City Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island. On November 14, 1889, Cochrane began a solo trip around the world in emulation of the fictional character Phileas Fogg from the 1873 Jules Verne novel “Around the World in Eighty Days” – completing her trip on January 25, 1890, in the record-breaking time of 72 days, six hours, 11 minutes, & 14 seconds. During this presentation, you’ll meet Nellie Bly in the US Embassy in Paris in February of 1919. The Great War has ended, and Nellie recounts her adventures as a reporter, in the US, Mexico and as a war correspondent, as she awaits permission to return to the US. The presentation is followed by a Q&A and photo opportunities. Got an evening to spare and want to learn something new? Skip the screen time and join us for Playing Cards Club! It’s basically a crash course followed by a casual game night; here’s the ‘deal’: The First 30 Minutes: A library staff member will walk everyone through how the card game of the month works. They’ll cover the rules, the goal, and a few tricks to help you win. The Next 60 Minutes: Everyone will break into groups and actually play! It’s the best way to let the rules sink in while hanging out and having a laugh. No experience? No problem. No partner? No worries. We’ll find you a seat at a table. We’ll provide the cards and light refreshments; you just bring yourself. This program is free to attend. Registration is not required. Community Naloxone Training

Naloxone Training helps people learn how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose. You will be taught the warning signs of an overdose and how to use naloxone (Narcan) to help save a life. The training is simple and provides clear, step-by-step guidance on what to do until emergency help arrives. After completing the training, participants will receive a box of naloxone. In addition to learning how to respond to an overdose, this training also covers basic information about opioid use and risk factors. You will be introduced to local resources that can help support individuals struggling with substance use. By increasing awareness and access to naloxone, this program works to reduce overdose deaths and improve the health and safety of our community. This free training is intended for adults. JOY Volunteers: Birthday Crafts

Kentucky Derby Celebration

The Kentucky Derby is the longest continually held sporting event in America, and it is one of the most prestigious horse races in the world. It has a rich tradition of fancy dress, specialty food, and of course, horse-racing. Celebrate the Run for the Roses by making a traditional “Fascinator” hat to wear while you view clips of the greatest two minutes in sports, sip Mint Juleps (non-alcoholic) and enjoy other refreshments. Explore horse riding gear provided by Tiny Voice Therapy Services of Elburn, play games including a children’s obstacle course, “place your bets” to win a raffle prize, and get your photo taken in the winner’s circle! Dressing up for a day at the races is encouraged for this program.
