NIU’s 
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences External Programming will host two one-day professional development conferences this fall as part of the “New Ideas” series.
“New Ideas in English: To Teach or Not to Teach? Shakespeare, Lee, Twain, and more” is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the Capitol Room of the Holmes Student Center.
Sessions include “Who is Atticus Finch? Contending with Character and Conflict in the Study of Literature,” “Using Controversy to Engage Students in Analysis of Complex Literature,” “ ‘The Healthy Debate’ and Other Classroom Activities on Shakespeare” and “Can I Teach ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ in Today’s Classroom? Absolutely!”
Registration is available online; the early bird deadline is Friday, Oct. 9.
“New Ideas in Foreign Language: Teaching Strategies” will take place from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in the Regency Room of the Holmes Student Center.
Sessions include “Showing Growth through Integrated Performance Assessments,” “Using Metacognition to Improve Learners Listening Skills,” “Online Language Learning Approaches” and “Immersion Experiences in a Domestic Curriculum.”
Registration is available online; the early bird deadline is Friday, Oct. 23.
Participants at either workshop will receive Evidence of Completion certificates documenting four Professional Development Hours.
