Join in the family fun at the annual DeKalb Kite Fest held on the NIU campus this Sunday, September 12th from 11am-4pm. Colorful kites fly over the skies of DeKalb and delight the entire family; kite making for kids, kite candy drop, stunt kites, dancing kites, and more. Bring your lawn chairs, pop up tents, and blankets to enjoy the entire day.
A barrel kite five stories high and 50-feet across is among the featured kites (weather permitting). It is so massive, it takes a large truck or piece of heavy construction equipment to hold it in place. Many featured kites defy description, including “fighting kites” and a head-turning display of three, 90-foot-long octopus kites called Octopile. Other kites will include: stunt and dancing kites, Mimi the Pink Ladybug, Teddy Bear, owl, manta ray and cat kites. Kite Fest 2010 will be held in the field of NIU’s “North 40,” at Lucinda Avenue and Kishwaukee Drive, DeKalb, near Annie’s Woods and Anderson Hall. Admission is free.
Building on the success of last year’s family-oriented event, Kite Fest will feature kite-making for children, a candy drop, TAILS animal petting, give-aways and games. Food will be provided by DeKalb Elks Lodge 765.
Some of the area’s best kite-fliers and kite-builders will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate their skills. DeKalb Kite Fest 2010 offers plenty of space for participants to fly their own kites. Bring a kite, make a kite or buy a kite from ChicagoKite/Kite Harbor Kite Shop, which will be on-site. WLBK will conduct a live broadcast from the kite field as well.
