Craft beer isn’t just a trend – it’s part of the fatherhood fabric for many Gen X and younger Boomer dads. They brewed it in their garages, supported it at neighborhood taprooms, and passed their favorite IPAs down like heirlooms. But in 2025, breweries aren’t just about hops and hops alone – they’re also some of the most relaxed, family-friendly spots around.
To find out where dads would really like to spend Father’s Day, Mixbook surveyed 3,019 fathers. The question:
‘If you could pick any local brewery to celebrate with your family, where would you want to go?’
Here’s where the beer glasses are pointing in Illinois:
#1 Alter Brewing Company – Downers Grove
Located in the suburbs of Chicago, Alter Brewing Company features a modern taproom with ample seating. While they offer bar snacks, families are encouraged to bring their own food. The brewery’s relaxed atmosphere and variety of beers make it a comfortable spot for gatherings.
#2 Midwest Coast Brewing Co. – Chicago
Situated in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood, Midwest Coast Brewing Co. offers a spacious taproom and a rooftop area. Families are welcome to bring their own food, and their diverse beer lineup caters to a variety of tastes.
#3 Old Bakery Beer Company – Alton
Housed in a historic bakery building, Old Bakery Beer Company is known for its organic beers and commitment to sustainability. The family-friendly taproom offers a full menu and hosts community events, making it a welcoming space for all.
“Craft breweries have become the modern dad’s backyard – a place to unwind, catch up with friends, and still be in parent mode,” says a Mixbook spokesperson. “This survey shows just how many breweries are striking that perfect balance between beer and family time.”
