The Illinois Health Department has stated that Illinois has been leading the nation in the number of new COVID-19 cases, as a second surge of the virus spreads to every region of the state. This surge already appears to be more severe than the initial outbreak this past spring. Health department data suggest the peak is still a long way off, with holiday gathering to produce new surges.
Governor Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle have issued a variety of stay-at-home advisories.
This news comes as Illinois health officials on Friday reported 15,315 new COVID-19 cases, breaking the record for daily cases for the 4th consecutive day. The previous high was the 12,702 cases reported Thursday.
DeKalb County reported 109 new COVID-19 cases and Northern Illinois University reported seven new cases as well.
Gov. JB Pritzker suggested that the local areas and regions could be superseded by a state order if violations of mitigations continue.
