For many people, the living room is where they spend the most waking hours. It’s where they relax after a long day at work, entertain company, and play with the kids. Whether you own your home or you live in rental housing, you naturally want your living room to look its best. According to a recent article in Better Homes and Gardens, one way to accomplish this is to choose a focal point when you’re arranging furniture. A focal point can be a large window, your entertainment center, or anything else that is anchored to a wall.
For a more intimate look and feel in your living room, pull furniture a few feet away from the walls. If you want to encourage conversation among your family members and guests, space the chairs no more than eight feet apart. However, make sure that a coffee table or end table is in easy reach of every chair so people can comfortably grab the things they need. It’s also a good idea to place side tables at the same height as the arm of your sofa or chairs for this reason.
To avoid stubbed toes and other minor injuries from coffee tables, be sure to place them approximately 18 inches from the sofa. Lastly, pay attention to the traffic lanes you create when placing your living room furniture. They should be several feet wide to allow for easy movement.
Bedrooms
Your bedroom or your child’s bedroom are the most personal places in your home. They give each family member the opportunity to decorate and arrange furniture according to their own tastes. One easy way to add visual dramatic effects to bedrooms is to angle the bed, dresser, and other furniture. When bedroom furniture is placed around the perimeter of the bedroom, it’s often too far apart to be aesthetically pleasing or functional. If you want to make the bed the focal point of the room, consider adding a headboard if it doesn’t have one or a bench, trunk, or basket at the foot of the bed.
