The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb is hosting a winter farmers’ market with arts and crafts at their church located at 158 North Fourth Street this Saturda,y December 10th, from 9am to 3pm. This market will be great for anyone who misses the great summer farmers’ markets we have in DeKalb or Sycamore. It will also be an opportunity to support local farmers and artisans while buying healthy foods and craft items.
The market will include grass fed beef, free range chickens & eggs from the Hasselmann Farm just over the northern DeKalb county border. Also being offered is fresh herbs and fresh vegetables from the Erehwon Farm in Elburn. There will be several crafters including home spun yarn from DeKalb. Fresh baked French pastries and other goods will be available as well. Among the great craft choices too numerous to mention are handmade jewelry, knitted items, birdhouses, sun-catchers, goat soap, homespun yarn, weaving tools, wood-carving, and many other handmade items. There will be over twenty local vendors.
In addition to the great shopping opportunities there will also be live music all day and hot food all combining to create a festive and fun atmosphere.
“We want this to be an enjoyable community event that will help support our local farmers and artists.” said Dan Kenney one of the market organizers. “It is part of our goal of building a more sustainable community. Research shows that of every $100 spent at locally owned businesses $68 stays in the community, as opposed to only $43 staying in the community when purchases are made at non-local businesses.”
This year an educational component has also been added with presentations by some of the vendors on ethical and healthy food choices. There will be two other markets on Saturdays this season, January 26th and March 24th. A small admission fee of one dollar will be collected at the door. The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb is located at 158 North Fourth Street, in DeKalb.
