Support for our Neighbors in Texas
As rain continues to pour down on southeastern Texas, the span of flooding and devastation increases. Reports estimate that nearly 450,000 individuals in Houston and surrounding areas are feeling the disastrous effects of Hurricane Harvey . Even though we’re some 1,000 miles away, those living through this disaster are our neighbors.

Natural disasters are no stranger to DeKalb County. The most recent being the EF-4 tornado that ripped through parts of northwestern DeKalb County and the Fairdale community. In response, a fund was established at the Community Foundation to provide a safe and convenient way to provide much needed support for those affected by the tornado. We witnessed the incredible generosity of people who gave in support of rebuilding Fairdale right here in our community two years ago after a devastating tornado affected many homes and lives.
Part of our mission at the DeKalb County Community Foundation is to connect people who care with causes that matter. Therefore, as a community foundation we encourage you to reach out and extend a helping hand. If you wish to do so, here are a few options for safe and convenient ways to give. Each is a trusted organization that will use your tax-deductible contributions as you intended.
- Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, established at the Greater Houston Community Foundation
- The American Red Cross
- The Salvation Army
Thank you for demonstrating the powerful generosity of DeKalb County by supporting communities like Houston impacted by significant crises.
– Dan Templin, Executive Director, DeKalb County Community Foundation

JJ Watt is also raising money. He’s raised over $4 million in 48 hours. Correction: they’ve hit $5 million and the goal is now $6 million. All funds will go directly to the victims of Harvey. He was talking about it on GMA and The Weather Channel this morning. Just an option if you’re looking for another avenue to donate.
I would recommend the Salvation Army too.
Pam, the Salvation Army is one of the three that they mentioned. They are excellent alsoð
Kathy Elliott I was just suggesting, I would go with Salvation Army over American Red Cross.
Samaritan’s Purse is another excellent place to donate to. They are on site and all donations go directly to rescue, feeding, clothing, medical.
