Ingredients for Healthy Living: Snacks That Count
Everyone loves to snack. By selecting foods that matter, snacks can be a very important part of your daily diet. As we look to the last summer road trip or gear up for back to school, Jo Cessna, Healthy Culinary Instructor, will cover tips on stocking the fridge and pantry with good selections. The class includes gluten free snacks, no fat snack and many other types. Recipes and tastings provided. Safe Sitter Basic
This internationally recognized babysitting program teaches 11 – 13 year olds the skills to provide children in their care a safe, nurturing environment. Includes Safe Sitter backpack, manual, supplies and light refreshments. Safe Sitter Basic is Aug. 8, from 8:30 am – 3 pm at Kish Hospital Roberts Conference Center. $40/person. Free Know Your Numbers Screening Appointments
Kishwaukee Community Hospital has enhanced the format of Know Your Numbers to be more focused on patients through individual appointments. Knowing and understanding your numbers is a component vital to good health. Heart disease and other health issues can be predicted using this information. As a service to the communication, Kish Hospital is offering the following screenings and education free of charge in the convenience of one appointment: blood test for cholesterol and blood sugar levels, blood pressure, waist measurement, body mass index (BMI), and education. Appointments are available the 2nd and 4th Thursdays each month. Registration and 12 hour fast required. Must be 20 years or older. New Baby Care
A special class for parents, grandparents and other caregivers that covers all of the basics of newborn care. Instructed by a certified childbirth educator. The class is $15 per couple. Prepared Childbirth Weekend Express
This class discusses pregnancy, labor, delivery and post-partum in a one class format. Please bring 2 – 3 pillows to class. Instructed by certified childbirth educator. The class is $20 per couple. Sibling Class
Three to five-year-olds can learn how babies look and behave. Mommy & Me Breastfeeding Group
Mothers and babies are welcome to attend this breastfeeding group to discuss the joys and challenges of breastfeeding. Drop in with your baby to meet other breastfeeding moms and receive the support and encouragement you need. Facilitated by a certified lactation consultant, this group is meant to provide support and assist with any issues you and baby may be experiencing with feeding. The free group meets next on Mon., Aug. 5, and on the first Monday of every month at 10 a.m. at Valley West Community Hospital. No registration is required. C-Section Expectations
A cesarean section (c-section) is the delivery of a baby through an incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. A certified childbirth educator explains this procedure beginning with when to schedule it through what happens after you get home. If you know you’re having a c-section, even if it’s a repeat, setting expectations and understanding the process can ease some anxiety you may be experiencing. This free class is Tues., Aug. 6, from 5 – 6:30 pm, at Valley West Community Hospital. Registration is required for this program and closes three days before the program date. Blood Pressure Clinic
Valley West nurse volunteers offer free weekly blood pressure checks at Valley West Community Hospital every Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. Just walk in, no registration is required.
