Reform advocacy group For the Good of Illinois and its founder, Adam Andrzejewski has launched a massive web portal to provide public access to more than 7 million lines of public employment data. The portal, available at www.OpentheBooks.com, lets citizens view expenditures for salaries, retirement pensions and state-level workers compensation claims. All levels of Illinois government are available for search on the portal.
“We expect many transparency and fiscal reform initiatives will spring forth once the people have access to the information we make available at the portal,” said Andrzejewski. “This portal is by no means complete though,” he added. “We still have more information to obtain and post but we are well on our way. Today, saving Illinois from financial disaster will begin with a thousand mouse clicks across the state.”
Browsing through the database is challenging and shocking.
Fady Charbel, employed by the University Of Illinois – Chicago, was paid $1,180,412.56 in 2010. Charbel has been earning more than $1 million per year since 2006. Dean Toriumi, also with UIC, made a whopping $2,156,281.56 in 2008.
UIC tops the monthly retirement checks list for the state as well. Michael Johnson pulls in $20,957.35 per month. Tops in 2011. Locally, John Lewis, who retired from Northern Illinois University tops the list with a monthly pension of $12,686.24.
Unsustainable.
There are more than 450 employees working for governmental units (including education) in DeKalb County earning more than $100,000 per year. The OpentheBooks.com database is not yet complete for DeKalb County so more names are expected to be added to the list. Far too many of these employees do not reside in the county. Paying taxes elsewhere does not ease the burden on local taxpayers.
The For the Good of Illinois organization (and OpentheBooks.com) hope that citizens will review this information when deciding how to vote in state and local elections. Said Andrzejewski, “if we ever hope to bring this state back from the brink of fiscal catastrophe, voters have to understand where money is going and hold officials accountable.”
Indeed.

Whenever I see reports from reform groups I like to know where the funding for the group comes from. Do you know where For the Good of Illinois receives money from?

Joe, much of For the Good of Illinois funding came from its founder Adam Andrezjewski. He and his brother started a phone book directory here in DeKalb built it and sold it. Much of the funding came from grassroots people. I think I’ve put in the neighhborhood of $200, $50 or so dollars at a time.
Andrejewski ran for governor as a Republican in the last race and polled respectably so he may be attracting traditional GOP donors now, I dunno. As long as I’ve known him he’s been a champion of transparency, “Every dime online in real time” is his slogan so to speak. I consider him an ally in the fight to restore good government in Illinois.
I am also curious and think it wise to know the funding sources for those who oppose reform…

I disagree with Joe on general anything! Hi Joe

A retired teacher from Danville wrote on Adam’s blog, about how administrators, teachers, and school districts vary widely in their compensation. It is by Marjorie Jordan:
http://forthegoodofillinois.org/blog/2011/09/illinois-billionaire-bureaucrat-club-q-a/
She is right that the public perception of the top dogs then gives the false impression that all teachers, etc. make outrageous salaries. And, I totally believe her when she wrote that she believes she worked harder than the superintendents, without the salary and the perks.

If we don’t stop giving away our industrial base, our State and our country won’t be able to provide vital services for our citizens. We have lost 58,000 American factories since 2000. The war on labor started by Reagan and has reduced many in our middle class to the working poor. Dekalb county has low wage workers on Medicaid. Mac why don’t you include what the top private sector administrators and CEO’s are paid? Please include the salaries of the administrators at Kishwaukee Health System.

Stephen, I published a report on KCH administrators a few years back. They’ve got a few that would land right up there at the top. When I try to find private sector compensation I’m told that’s the difference between PUBLIC and PRIVATE sectors. I was not aware that low wage workers qualify for Medicaid so I’ve got more due diligence to do.
I’ve heard Reagan was a union buster. Certainly air traffic controllers felt that way. But I think technology did more taking away industrial blue collar jobs than any politician. But instead of dealing with that through retraining and vocational education we played left/right politics and now we’re caught in the middle of an evolutionary change from an industrial based economy to a service based economy.

Washington National will always be called Washington National in my house. I refuse to call it by its ‘new’ name. I saw first-hand what Reagan did to the air traffic controllers, and how the whole airline industry got turned upside down. Reagan’s dealings took income away from my family.

NIU is the number one employer in DeKalb County. It is a government agency, supported by tax dollars. Oh yeah, sure, there’s tuition and fees, etc., paid by parents/students, but a good part of those monies come from federal or state tax coffers by way of Pell/MAP grants and other tax supported educational programs. Then there’s the fact that NIU pays no property tax on a substantial amount of land and facility, which leaves a larger burden to the rest of us in the county, city, township, state, etc. For anyone to try and pretend any state university is somehow funded largely without tax dollars is ludicrous. The only government agency I can think of that might make this claim is the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which charges application fees to fund its operation (only to have some of those funds stolen by Congress for other purposes). But NIU…it is tax supported.
But to the point…Mac is correct. Regardless of the list’s absolute accuracy, profs working summers for “free”, etc., such a large number of highly paid government jobs and pensions in this county (and state) is unsustainable. The whole government complex is obese and must be downsized by choice now or we’ll all be downsized by disaster soon enough. Gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady understood this and promoted a 10% across the board cut for starters.
In DeKalb County, we have NIU as #1employer, Kish Health Systems as #2, and School District #428 as the third. All three are tax supported by one means or another to a large degree. Thank goodness there are some actual private manufacturers and other business concerns in the county that really do produce goods and services not related to or dependent on government support or purchasing. But they are too few and too small. We need many more.
I think Mac or Adam should publish alongside the Profs, Admins, Board Members, Elected and Appointed Municipal and School Officials…a paycheck list of the secretaries, janitors, groundsworkers, extra help, dayworkers, etc. at NIU and our other tax supported institutions. If the entire citizenry saw the contrast of those two salary lists side by side, there would be hoots and howls till the cows come home. And, I suspect, a few new lawmakers and agency heads after the next election. Maybe that’s exactly what “For the Good of Illinois” is hoping for? About time!

is salary the same as total compensation? i dont think it is but I dont have a PhD.

Now that’s a good question, Darold. But I don’t have a PhD either. Let’s ask Herb and Mike.

No, that does not include total compensation, just salaries, at least the ones for NIU I know for certain.

Mac,
i challenge you to go to the Chronicle of Higher Education and print the comparable figures for other universities. First the data you are presenting is distorted. Secondly, NIU in comparison to its peer group of public Ph.D. granting universities is at the extreme low end of compensation. Secondly, public universities as a whole pay considerably less than to privates. Get that data and print it, I dare you.
Second, printing top salaries and then pretending they are more general is at best disingenous and at worst i don’t what.
yes, typical employee at NIU especially at the highly trained and educated level earns more than does a less educated person. But by focusing on the top you are simply, distorting and doing so with intent.
Take a free enterprise private fortune 500 firm and then go down and list the salaries of the top 100 employees. Those figures would bother people and make them wonder why they are paying so much for whatever it is the firm produces. But if you went down and looked at average salaries of the typical worker a totally different picture would be present.
Selecting only top salaries (and then distorting them) from the private sector is a horrible, unfair, manipulative way of looking at the public sector. But what does one expect from those whose politics are shaped by alienation rather than a concern for the common good.
herb

Herb, be careful or I’ll institute a term limit on commenters. Of course, it would only apply to retired professors who annoy me. The same will apply to those who believe the pension numbers I’m getting ready to post are in error or distorted or at worst I don’t know what: the information in the report is provided by your government employer which is compiled and submitted annually as required by law and obtained using the Freedom of Information Act. Their website recommends that if you find an error in your record, you should also contact your government employer and request that your information be corrected.
I don’t care how much less NIU pays than UIC but it is striking. That’s not my point. This county. Total government payroll. Then take a step back and look at the whole picture that includes 102 other counties — and one of them is big enough to elect the governor of this state all by itself. Wowza. We can’t afford it.
And we all know that budget cuts start from the bottom up. Those are the people still waiting for the rewards to trickle down to them. Those that made the top of the list are not as at risk as those who didn’t. Think about that.
It’s for the common good, ya know.

Herb,
The total count of faculty (both High School and University) over 100K drops significantly if you apply the proper monthly pay – 9 months vs. 12 months (around 250 from the initial claim of 450). The bulk of the people in the actual 100k+ range are admin personnel. All these salaries at NIU are public and available on the 4th floor of Founders Library. It would have only taken a few hours to cross reference Mac’s sources to realize they were wrong. I looked at the printouts and was able to find many people in my college on that list that the salary was completely off. I think the website that the data came from was either motivated by some personal goal or just lazy. I came here making 42k less than what I made in private industry and after 9 years I am still making less – this is more of a labor of love.
Mike Haji-Sheikh

That just means the top dogs at other universities are totally and completely overpaid. That does not mean NIU’s top dogs are underpaid.

I checked the spread sheet from the state – it is correct and the writer of the article is still wrong. You are still as wrong as they are if you reprint with no due diligence. The problem with reprinting these articles is that often these people fudge the facts for some purpose other than the truth.
Mike Haji-Sheikh.

Please post or email the spread sheet from the state. I’m not trying to be difficult, just doing my due diligence.
I hear you on people often fudging the facts for some other purpose than the truth. I bet more than 90% of the polls and surveys conducted are done so for some other purpose than the truth.
My purpose is to illustrate the truth that government payroll and entitlements are not sustainable. We cannot cut taxes and spending to get out of this meltdown. We can’t raise taxes and increase our spending to get out of it either. And if we try to borrow our way out of it then what we’ve become accustomed to as the United States will cease to exist.
Another one of those reports that are circulating, for whatever reason, says that the number of people here in the U.S. in poverty in 2010 (46.2 million) is the largest number in the 52 years for which poverty estimates have been published.
Many of those now in poverty are college educated. A growing trend of newly impoverished are former government workers.
We need an all inclusive solution. Not one just for the Good People.

Mac,
Your list of salaries are in error. The person who put the list together figured the salaries on 12 month. The faculty are paid 9 month and most of us work for free in the summer to support our Grad students. You have me at $110k and I make $83K. This salary level is below what I made as a top engineer for a multinational. I checked other salaries in your list and many if not most were wrong. Your numbers for admins are correct for admins are paid 12 months. I would like an apology from you and a retraction otherwise we will be writing letters pointing out in detail the errors that you have made on the subject in both the Northern Star and the Chronicle.
Dr. Michael Haji-Sheikh

Michael, I would encourage you to write the Northern Star, the Chronicle and other newspapers/media in the state to point out any errors in this report. This is not my list or report. It was compiled by Adam Andrezewski and the non-profit organization, For the Good of Illinois. The contact person for this report is Doug O’Brien, his telephone number is (312) 363-8447. According to OpenTheBooks.com the information in the report is provided by your government employer which is compiled and submitted annually as required by law and obtained using the Freedom of Information Act. Their website recommends that if you find an error in your record, you should also contact your government employer and request that your information be corrected. It is my understanding that the figures contained in the report are total compensation and not salary. If they (OpenTheBooks) have miscalculated by such an error as you suggest then their report lacks any credibility. From my personal experience with Adam Andrewsewski I would be surprised and embarrassed if such an error was made. I would then, of course, apologize.

$83K is just a few thousand more per year than the painters who make around $77K. Plumbers, electricians, welders, carpenters, and elevator repair people I have total respect for because they have complicated jobs requiring training and skill. And, if the electricians, welders, carpenters, and elevator repair people make a mistake, they can all kill someone, plumbers to a lesser extent. But paying the painters more than the majority of the professors? I did commercial painting many years ago and I never made any decent money like that, not in my wildest dreams.

Some justified and some completely out of whack for what these people are giving taxpayers. Definitely interesting especially when you hear some of these people on this list complaining about their pay.
What is truly amazing to me is what the NIU President gets paid., $418,000.00 annually and he also has use of the NIU’s President’s living quarters and staff. Transportation and many other perks.
Here is what the President of the United States gets annually (now I know there are some additional perks but let’s think about the job duties also when we compare salaries):
The president earns a $400,000 annual salary, along with a $50,000 annual expense account, a $100,000 non-taxable travel account and $19,000 for entertainment. The most recent raise in salary was approved by Congress and President Bill Clinton in 1999 and went into effect in 2001.

Ivan, I think a better comparison should be to the Governor of Illinois instead of the President of the United States. Anybody dealing with North Korea or Iran has a bigger job than the Governor’s dealings with Mike Madigan. Madigan is only crafty, not a complete lunatic.

Mac-
“Quit sit te nothi.” All the brilliantly well educated bureaucrats justifying their unsustainable gravy train here overlook one plain and simple fact: private industry does not force anyone to pay money to them. Government DOES force EVERYBODY to sacrifice their discretionary income to support the ivory tower.
The only thing weaker than their logic is the backbone of these overcompensated, competition-phobic socialists.
Ironic how little compassion and understanding these supposedly “tolerant” and “compassionate” authorities have for the ones who feather their nests. Are they really both as brilliant as they claim yet as clueless as they appear? Will these public servants ever serve any of the public other than themselves and their own families?
