Update 4:29pm 1/6/14
The first day back from ‘Winter Break’ in many local area schools has been pushed back another day for many area school children. Wind chill warning remains in effect until noon on Tuesday. Wind chills of 30 below zero to 50 below zero are expected through midday Tuesday. These forecast wind chills are the lowest in nearly 20 years.
Strong north to northwest winds of 20 to 35 mph will continue to result in significant blowing and drifting snow through this afternoon, reducing visibilities and making many roads icy and impassible. Furthermore, large snow drifts can be expected to form across some roadways, especially those that are north to south oriented. Finally, due to the extreme cold, road salt is not effective in melting snow and ice on road surfaces. Many roads across the area are icy and dangerous and will remain so until the air mass moderates during mid week.
