Dishwashers are an amazing labor-saving device, but they still require human intervention to operate properly. This starts with quickly running the dishes under water before putting them in the dishwasher.
It is especially important to complete this step when the plates, bowls, cups, and other dishes may sit for several days before the unit is full enough to run a cycle.
Running a load with hot water ensures that food debris comes loose in addition to sanitizing the dishes for their next use. It’s also important to make sure that nothing is blocking the cleaning nozzles. The dishes will not get clean when any part of the unit is blocked, which is a waste of time and hot water.
Loading Various Types of Dishes
- Placing silverware in a colander in the sink before transferring to the dishwasher is the best way to make sure that no pieces end up in the garbage disposal.
- When the colander is full, simply take the silverware holder out of the dishwasher and load it with the forks, knives, and spoons.
- While some people swear by placing silverware with the tines up or down, neither proves exceptional results over the other. It’s more important to wash silverware consistently.
- Glasses should go on the top rack and plates and bowls on the bottom rack when it’s time to load the dishwasher. This makes for more even cleaning because dishes are not blocked by other dishes.
- It also simplifies the process of putting the dishes away. This can reduce trips back and forth to the cupboard by as much as 50 percent.
If there isn’t time to load the dishes right away, at least organize them on the countertop. This makes the entire process of loading and unloading go faster as well.
