A team of chefs, from Kishwaukee Hospital’s Food & Nutrition department, is proud to have placed first, receiving the People’s Choice Award and placed third in the Professional Chef category (judged by a local food critic) in this year’s 50 Men Who Cook competition. The team’s winning dish was a 22-hour smoked beef brisket, topped with mango relish, garnished with avocado lime crème, served on toasted quesadilla wedge. The team has placed well in the years it has competed, previously taking home two first place prizes. “It’s a great event to be part of and to give back to the community,” said Lawson. “Although it’s nice to win awards and be recognized, raising money for a great cause is what’s most important to us.”
The annual fundraiser, presented by KishHealth System, benefits CASA DeKalb County Inc. (Court Appointed Special Advocate), a nonprofit organization which trains local citizens as volunteer child advocates. The event was held on Aug. 15 at Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center, Northern Illinois University. At the event, prominent DeKalb County men created their own specialty dishes for those in attendance to sample, including appetizers, salads, side dishes, entrees, and desserts.
The Garden Café at Kishwaukee Hospital offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner and is open to the public. It serves healthy food choices, including a salad bar, and offers made-to-order entrees and grill items in a relaxed atmosphere, with indoor and outdoor seating.
