Paw Paw Township in Southern DeKalb County will soon be home to Illinois’ newest yoga retreat center, Stonehouse Farm, slated to open in July 2013. Daren Friesen, Owner and Director of Chicago’s Moksha Yoga Center, plans to expand the city’s vibrant yoga and wellness community to include the Midwest’s only yoga retreat center focusing on yoga, meditation and organic farming. The former RV park and campsite will transform into a retreat center and festival grounds, serving as a refuge for city-dwellers to experience the vitality and balance that come with healthy living.
Created in partnership with Daren and investors from the Chicago yoga community, the 37-acre farm is a 1.5 hour drive from the city, and will serve as a tranquil backdrop for cultivating a conscious lifestyle. Stonehouse Farm will be the setting for weekend workshops, one-day events and week-long retreats featuring renowned yoga teachers, meditation instructors, nutrition and other healthy-living experts.
The farm itself is home to lush forest, a grassy meadow, and a pristine lake, all centered around a historic Stone House built in 1863. Walking paths snake throughout the property offering spectacular views of native flora and fauna. The swimming lake is laced with a sand beach providing space for swimming and water sports. In addition to the emphasis on sustainability, the organic farm and garden will offer guests opportunities to grow their own food, then learn to prepare nourishing meals with cooking classes and nutritional seminars. Guests will also have the opportunity to wind their way through the meditative labyrinth, and take part in purification ceremonies in the sweat lodge. Encompassing all aspects of conscious living, Stonehouse will also offer theraputic bodywork and massage.
This summer, Stonehouse Farm will host specialized yoga weekends throughout the season, culminating in the First Annual Sukhava Bodhe Yoga & Music Festival – a jubilant celebration of happiness, health andcommunity–over Labor Day weekend.
