Cortland Celebrating 150 years of Incorporation as a Town in 2015
Cortland Town Clerk Cheryl Aldis is gathering memories, stories, memorabilia and pictures to use as a part of the sesquicentennial celebration of 2015. Residents past and present are encouraged to share the information that they have.
Since incorporated in 1865, the Town of Cortland has been characterized by hometown living in a warm community atmosphere. Cortland is unique from neighboring villages and cities because it is an Incorporated Town. The 2010 census conducted shows Cortland has a population of 4270 citizens. Cortland is the third largest Town in Illinois, with only the Towns of Cicero and Normal having a greater population.
Please contact the Office of the Clerk 815-756-3030 to make arrangements for bringing in memorabilia. Staff will copy or scan your treasurers and return them to you, if that is your desire. They have been gifted some memorabilia related to Schmidt & Sons Store, Cortland-DeKalb Yards, George M Olsen Custom Shelling, S & M Lunch, and Cortland Jr. Rifle Club trophies. Those items are on display in the Town Hall. They have also been provided with pictures of events from Cortland School, Cortland United Methodist Church and are looking for more.
Anything that you may have from your grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles would be appreciated. Written or video memories of long-time residents would be especially appreciated. They are your memories to share and Cortland would love to have them. Announcement of Sesquicentennial events in Cortland will be coming soon.
