Saturday is Electronic Recycling Day in DeKalb County

Many people have been holding on to broken electronics since the holiday season and will be happy to know that this Saturday is Electronic Recycling Day in DeKalb County. Since January 1, 2012, pitching unwanted electronic devices into the trash bin or tossing them out on the curb to be picked up has been illegal in Illinois. According to the state’s new and improved electronic Recycling and Reuse Act, it is now illegal to throw out more than 13 electronic products.  Goodwill or Best Buy will properly dispose of some old electronics in DeKalb County, but a fee may apply and they only take in so many each month.

County residents may bring in old computers and other outdated electronics to the collection this Saturday, April 14, 2012. Electronics will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. (or until the trailer space is filled) at the De Kalb County Health Department located at 2550 N. Annie Glidden Road, De Kalb. Enter the parking lot from the DRESSER ROAD entrance only. ID is required.

County residents can bring in computers, keyboards, mouse, fax machines, cell phones, telephones, game consoles, scanners, monitors, TV’s are considered a monitor (limit of 2), printers, stereos, speakers, DVD and VCR players and other electronics. Compact fluorescent bulbs for proper disposal/recycling. Used household batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, 9-volt, lantern, small rechargeable) will be accepted in zippered plastic bags. No “lead acid” batteries and no microwave ovens will be accepted. Only electronics will be collected at this event. No microwaves or automotive batteries will be accepted as a part of this collection.

The Electronics Collection Day is open to any individual or business. There are no limitations to the amount of electronics which can be brought in with the exception of monitors. There is a limit of two monitors per person. This collection program is free and for DeKalb County residents only. The Electronics Collection program is being sponsored by the De Kalb County Health Department Solid Waste Management Program and the DeKalb County Farm Bureau.
