Voter turnout for the consolidated elections hit historic lows in DeKalb County. Only eight (8) percent of the registered voters in the county cast a ballot. There were few contested races.
There were several races that did not field candidates to fill the slots available. Write in candidates include District 428 Board of Education and Town of Cortland Trustees. Write in votes will not be certified until April 23.
Do you support removing the corrupting influence of money on our political system by prohibiting politicians from taking campaign money from industries they regulate; increasing transparency for campaign funding; empowers all voters through a tax rebate voucher to contribute to the candidates they support; prohibiting representatives and senior staff from all lobbying activity for five years once they leave office; and placing limits on superPACs?
As for the referendum questions on the ballot only one (see above) could be decided by all voters in the county and only 4155 ballots were cast. The advisory only anti-corruption question was overwhelmingly supported by 87% of those who voted.
Malta fire protection district voters approved (56%-44%) an increase in their property tax rates to pay for ambulance service. The fire protection district will levy a special at a rate not to exceed 0.40% of the value of all taxable property within the district as equalized or assessed by the Department of Revenue. It is expected to increase property taxes on a single family residence and having a fair market value at the time of the referendum of $100,000 by an estimated $133.32.
Hinckley residents overwhelmingly rejected (74%-26%) authorizing the village to levy a 1% non-Home Rule sales tax for expenditures on municipal operations or public infrastructure, or property tax relief.

Almost 700 less voters participated in the 3rd ward contest since the turn of the century. The only ward to see an increase in active voters was the 7th. Ward boundaries were redrawn after the 2010 census.
