Sources from Northern Illinois University announced that the enrollment is up for fall 2020 by 160 students over 2019. This is the first increase since the decline started in 2008. Current enrollment is 16,769 (including all campuses) and still below the enrollment in the early 2000s when there were over 26,000 students at NIU.
The increase can be attributed to the fact students and parents wanted to stay closer to home. This has challenged the norm of over 49% of High School Seniors going out of state for college.
After the Labor Day weekend, the number of NIU COVID-19 cases rose by 73 making the total count over 150 since the start of the new school year. These cases are not counted as part of the DeKalb County cases.
NOTE: Bradley University has enacted a two-week lock-down due to the growing number of students contracting COVID-19. According to news service the administration stated this action was taken due to students socializing on and off campus.
