Kishwaukee College students will be leading a Journal Making Workshop on March 22 from 7:30 – 8:30p.m. at the DeKalb Public Library in the Zimmerman Meeting Room. The workshop is part of The Big Read in DeKalb. This year’s Big Read text is In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. Pre-registration for the Journal Making Workshop is required and space is limited.
The students leading the workshop are in Cynthia de Seife’s ART 283 Art in the Elementary Classroom class at Kishwaukee College. “Participants will make a blank journal. One of the sisters in the book, Mate, has a journal, and much of her story is told through journal entries,” de Seife said. All supplies will be provided for the journal making workshop. De Seife noted that the workshop is appropriate for ages 10-adult.
Immediately prior to the journal-making workshop will be an appearance by In the Time of Butterflies’ author Julia Alvarez. Alvarez will speak from 6 – 7:00p.m. with a book signing afterwards at the DeKalb Public Library.
This Big Read program is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Art Midwest. Free copies of the book will be handed out at this and all Big Read events.
