John Younce wins 2011 Golf Senior National Championship
June 24th, 2011. The phone rang at 10:30 p.m. at my house Friday night. I picked up the phone and said “hello.” The voice on the other end answers, “I did it. I am a National Champion.” It was my father. He was driving home from Houston, Texas where he just completed a long road to his first Golf National Championship. Most of the time the tables are turned in life, the father is congratulating the son on his accomplishments. Today, I can say……”Congratulations Dad, I am proud of you.”
The 2011 NSGA Championship was played at Black Horse Golf Club in Cypress, Texas. He had a three day total of 225 (72, 73, 80), besting the silver medalist by five strokes.
My dad has always been a competitor. As a coach he lead three teams to state championships, one has a high school football coach and two American League baseball teams. After coaching his sons for years on the gridiron and baseball diamond, he decided to pick up his golf clubs again. For the past fifteen years he has worked on perfecting his game. He even has a range in his Eastern Kentucky backyard, despite the rolling eyes of my mother.
Since picking the game back up, my dad has won a number of state championships throughout the Midwest and South regions of the United States. He has participated in now four National Senior Olympic Games, with a previous high finish of third. Unlike most in competitive sports, he seems to get better with age. Now sixty-two years old, he exercises four to five times per week, is regimented with his stretching routine, and visits his local chiropractor. “I just feel better and loose after getting adjusted,” my dad will always say. I can assure you, God gives us the gifts (inside & out) to get out of life what we want. It is up to us what we do with those gifts. My dad has been blessed with health, but he takes care of himself and listens to his body.
Congratulations Dad on winning the 2011 Golf Senior National Championship. Now you need to spot me two strokes a hole instead of the usual one next time we play.
A PROUD SON,
Dr. Josh Younce
