NIU’s Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning is currently accepting site supervisor applications for the Huskie Service Scholars (HSS) program for the 2016-2017 academic year.
The deadline is Sunday, Jan. 31. Registration is available online.
HSS provides opportunities for first-generation or low-income freshmen or first-semester transfer students to engage on campus and in the community.
Students accepted into the program complete 300 hours of service over the course of one academic year, after which they receive $1,200 tuition waivers as compensation for their time, dedication and hard work.
Each student is placed on a team hosted by a specific campus partner to help them achieve their service requirements. Students work to complete their hours through their campus partner as well as in the community.
Service to the campus partner is a regular commitment that students make each week. In the past, the scholars in the program have assisted offices in a variety of ways, including programming prep work, data collection, tabling events and volunteer projects put on by the respective campus partners. Hours in office is dependent upon the office’s needs and the student’s availability.
The service that students perform for the campus partners should:
- help students to understand and contribute to the mission of those offices;
- allow the students to interact with faculty, staff and students across campus; and
- challenge students to use critical thinking skills.
In return, campus partners provide students with projects and tasks that are within their ranges of interest and help them to practice and develop the skills they need within their majors.
Participation in HSS helps students to grow and expand their knowledge on how they can serve their community and enhance their education through real-world experiences.
