Intercity bus service connects NIU with Chicago, Quad Cities
Beginning June 1, the Holmes Student Center at Northern Illinois University is among seven stops on a Greyhound Bus Lines route between Chicago and Davenport, Iowa.
The route also includes stops in Rochelle, Dixon and Moline. Greyhound will service all cities on the route four times a day, seven days a week.
The new “Greyhound Connect” rural bus service for Illinois was developed through a partnership between Illinois Department of Transportation, Lee County and Greyhound. The intercity suburban bus line is funded through the federal Rural Area Formula Grants program to connect Chicago to Davenport via Interstate 88.
A proposal for the route to stop at the in Naperville-Aurora at the north side of the Rt. 59 Metra station is being heard by the Naperville City Council Tuesday evening. According to a document from Greyhound, “NIU specifically weighed in on the schedule times for the Naperville-DeKalb portion of the service as it had identified a need based on the number of NIU students residing in Naperville.”
The DeKalb stop, at the NIU Holmes Student Center, conveniently connects to the NIU Huskie Line transit service.
Greyhound will use smaller, 24-passenger buses to operate service along the Interstate 88 corridor. The coaches are equipped with two wheelchair securement positions, 3-point seat belts and electrical outlets. Tickets can be purchased online through the Greyhound website or through Greyhound’s mobile app. Greyhound also has ticketing available via most 7-11 convenience store locations.
The route is part of the growing network of rural bus services across the state of Illinois, which can be accessed online www.illinoisbusnetwork.com. The schedule features a trip in each direction each morning and afternoon.

This is good news for the students. Some may recall that Greyhound used to have a stop on campus and it was especially busy on weekends.
