Lonely Child: The Life and Music of Claude Vivier
Time: 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Date: Saturday, June 28th
Place: DeKalb Public Library, Nancy D. Castle Collaboration Studio
Many consider Claude Vivier to be the finest composer Canada has ever produced. In his life, cut short by a tragic murder at the age of 34, he produced 49 completed compositions. These range from full orchestral works to chamber ensembles to solo pieces. At the core of all of them are themes of loneliness and isolation, something Vivier was all too familiar with as a gay man. Jack Watson is a musician and a composer with a bachelor’s degree in music composition from NIU. In his time at Northern, Jack studied the work and life of Claude Vivier and the intersection between Vivier’s music and his identity as a gay man. This program will delve into the life of Claude Vivier, his music, and how his identity as a gay man influences both of those things. Prior experience with music composition or theory is not required but encouraged. This program is for teens and adults. For more information, please contact Jack at jackw@dkpl.org or (815) 756-9568 ext. 2851.
