The Town of Cortland, with the assistance of its Public Works is providing large waste containers for a week of spring clean-up activities. They would like to encourage Cortland residents to take advantage of this opportunity to dispose of household trash and accumulated “junk!” These containers will be placed at the Cortland Fire Station located at 30 W. North Av. and will be available from Monday, May 4th until Monday, May 11th, 2015.
These dumpsters may NOT be used for the disposal of yard waste, large appliances, car parts or tires, and paint or other hazardous materials. Residents may contact Environmental Field Services* (800-480-4337) for removal of large appliances. (*a fee will be charged by this company).
The Town’s Nuisance Ordinance prohibits the deposit or storage of junk, trash, and refuse on private or public property within the Town where such storage is not specifically authorized under the provisions of the zoning regulations of the Town. “Junk, trash, and refuse” are defined to include any and all waste matter, whether reusable or not, which is offensive to the public health, safety or to the aesthetics of the neighborhood, and is specifically intended to include, but not be limited to paper, wrappings, cigarettes, cardboard, tin cans, yard clippings, wood, glass, bedding, crockery and similar materials, old iceboxes, refrigerators, stoves, tractors, machinery of any kind, any parts thereof, worn out, wrecked, inoperable, or abandoned automobiles, and any vehicle not currently licensed by the State of Illinois or other state or country, exposed to the view of the general public and not either enclosed in a building or structure, or located on the sales lot of a licensed automobile dealer.
Residents having inoperable or unlicensed vehicles or trailers may contact the Cortland Police Department (815-756-2558) for information and assistance in complying with this ordinance.
The Town of Cortland hopes this program will be of use to their residents. Following the Spring Clean-Up week, the Police Department will be issuing warning notices to residents in violation of this ordinance prior to taking enforcement and abatement action.
