Chicago’s Newest Artwork
When visiting Downtown Chicago this summer past sundown, take time to enjoy one of the newest attractions in Chicago. Art on theMART is a color canvas to excite young and old and is the largest permanent digital art projection in the world. The location is theMART (formerly known as the Merchandise Mart) by the Chicago River.
In the spirit of Chicago’s great legacy of public art and culture, Art on theMART will be the longest-running and largest digital art projection in the world. The first-of-its-kind for Chicago, this curated series of digital artworks will be projected across 2.5 acres of theMart’s exterior river-façade. It is scheduled to run for the next 29 years.
Every night, a 25-story-tall video projection takes over the south side of the old Merchandise Mart, filling the building’s historic facade with vibrant colors and moving images. Utilizing Harnessing 34 digital projectors, the show features work by a rotating lineup of artists and is best viewed from Wacker Drive. The New Riverwalk, between Wells and Orleans Streets, also is a great viewing point. Art on theMART lights up the evening seven nights week, with projections beginning approximately 15 minutes after sunset.
Art on theMART is now projecting four new iconic artworks from the Art Institute of Chicago’s permanent collection across the 2.5-acre river-façade of theMART. The newest visual images include Georgia O’Keeffe’s Yellow Hickory Leaves with Daisy, Georges-Pierre Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte—1884, Vincent van Gogh’s The Bedroom, and Grant Wood’s American Gothic will join the current summer programming.
