This Saturday the Illinois Chapter of the 40&8 Veteran Organization will host its State convention in Bloomington, Illinois. Part of the convention is to give awards to people and organizations that have provided meritorious service. Each year 40&8 gives out four major awards and in 2023 DeKalb (IL) will receive three (3) of these acknowledgements.
The City of DeKalb has been acknowledged as the State of Illinois ‘Veteran City of the Year‘. This award is given to a city/town that has or is doing something significant for veterans and veteran families in that city/town. DeKalb Mayor Cohen Barnes (US Army Veteran) will attend the ceremony and receive this award.
DeKalb also received an award for the State of Illinois ‘Law Enforcement Officer of the Year‘. This award is given to DeKalb Police Officer Allison Remnes, a resource officer for DeKalb School District 428. This award is given in tribute to a Law Enforcement Officer that has performed in an outstanding capacity to make their community safe and secure.
The third award goes to the State of Illinois ‘Veteran of the Year‘. This acknowledgment goes to USAF Veteran Michael Embrey. The 40&8 Organization brands this in the French term “Voyageur/Veteran”. The purpose of the award is to recognize a 40&8 member that has performed outstanding service to fellow veterans and their community.
DeKalb is truly a “Veteran Friendly City“.
