When Lehan’s Pharmacy held their 65th anniversary Customer Appreciation Day the first 500 people to show up received a crisp new $2 bill as long as they agreed to spend it locally. Gracie and I got there early. The parking lot was full. Inside was like a DeKalb reunion. Everyone we met had a smile on their face.
Yes, we got our $2 bills. And we’re spending them locally with independent business operators.
Those 500 two dollar bills might not turn the national economy around but if spent locally they just might be a shot in your neighbors arm.
So, I chose to spend my $2 at Sunshine Ice Cream Shoppe and Bakery in the Junction Center in DeKalb. I did so because Brian Weydert, owner/operator, took the time to attend a DeKalb city council meeting to defend local business’s position that city hall ought not subsidize corporate chain competition. And the council listened!
Nicole Weydert was working when I spent the $2 bill. Small independent businesses are often family operated. I asked Nicole if I could take her picture with the $2 bill. She said yes. I asked her if she would take a picture of whoever she gave the $2 to as change from an order and ask them to repeat the process at a local independent shop of their choice.
Let’s see how this $2 bill travels! Send us a picture of where you spent your $2 bill if you got one from Lehan’s. Or post it on our Facebook page. I think there’s a story here.

As most people know who know me, I usually carry metal dollars as I work outside a lot and hate wet paper in my pocket.
Over the years, I have actaully had merchants refuse to take them as payment as they were not “real paper money.”
Since I usually pay cash for everything from groceries to cars, the merchants who complain or outright turn down my money make my buying decisions even easier. In one case, I smiled upon reading that one of them was closing the doors on their business after they insulted me for the type of American money I carried.
I have always wondered what the path travelled by my dollar coins is after they leave my possession.

Lothson’s Karry Out Chicken reported they got one of the $2 on an order of chicken. Now that’s a delicious way to spend locally!

I was honored that we were invited to partake in the Lehan festivities not only as the caterer of food for their patrons but to also be on the receiving side of more than fourty 2$ bills! Congrats on 65 years. Dekalb, keep those bills rolling.
