On the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks this Sunday, two local events have been planned to remember the tragic day 10 years ago. Both events are free and open to the public.
Kishwaukee Community Hospital and the DeKalb and Sycamore fire departments will hold a memorial Sunday honoring those who died in the terrorist attack on September 11th, 2001. The community is invited to join uniformed members of the fire departments for the memorial, which will be held at 1pm in the hospital’s healing garden. Gen. Steven P. Huber with the Illinois Army National Guard, state Rep. Robert Pritchard, R-Hinckley, and DeKalb and Sycamore fire chiefs Bruce Harrison and Mark Kessler will speak at the event,
said DeKalb Fire Capt. Tony Cox. After the memorial, the hospital is hosting a reception,. Anyone is welcome to attend.
An open mic event will be held from 4-6pm Sunday at DeKalb Square Park, at the corner of North Fourth Street and Lincoln Highway. Hosted by emcee Christopher Sims, the open mic event gives the public an opportunity to share thoughts, poetry and songs. David Stocker will lead a drumming circle. In case of inclement weather, the open mic event will be held inside the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb at 158 N. Fourth St. After the open mic, an evening of readings, poetry and music will be held from 6:30-8pm at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Folk-funk band Clio, a cappella group Cymbal, choral group Bread and Roses and a large community choir will perform. A multifaith blessing will be offered by various religious leaders at 6:30 p.m., and small groups will be offered the opportunity for discussion. A mass choir performance of the song “Deep Peace” will close the event.
