Hanging your new flat-screen TV on the wall is a great way to free up your floor space while removing extra clutter from the room. However, there are just a few things you should consider for safety, appearances and comfortable viewing.
Finding the Right Wall
Naturally, you want to choose a location that offers comfortable viewing from the seating in your room. However, safety should be a top consideration. Undoubtedly, you’ve paid a great deal for your new TV, and you wouldn’t want to watch it crashing to the floor any time soon.
To secure flat-screen TV’s to a wall safely, you’ll need to use a simple stud finder to locate an area of the wall with studs. Remember, if necessary, you could always rearrange your furniture. Also, don’t assume that you can use drywall anchors, which aren’t sturdy enough to do the job.
Mounting TV’s Above the Fireplace
You really shouldn’t consider mounting the TV above a fireplace. To begin with, the location is too high to view comfortably, there may be power and signal issues and the heat and soot given off from a fire can damage flat-screen TV’s.
Extra Components
Be sure to consider extra components that need to be attached to the TV like DVRs, cable boxes or game consoles. You may need to add a shelf or a bookshelf below the TV so they can reach the output ports of the TV.
Concealing the Cords
Having one or more cords dangling from your TV or other components isn’t very attractive. To deal with cords, you could have a new power outlet mounted behind your TV, mount components behind your TV or use a kit designed to cover cords.
Accessible Ports
If you are still adding new components in your home theater, you may want to consider a wall mount, which is designed to telescope outwards to give you easier access to the ports on the backside of the TV.
Adjustable Mounts
Adjustable mounts allow viewers to change the angle of the TV when outdoor light (sun) interferes with TV viewing.
Tools for the Job
You’ll need a screwdriver bit, drill and a stud finder to mount your new TV.
