Lucy Deckard of Academic Research Funding Strategies, LLC, will visit NIU to present a workshop for new faculty on developing competitive grant proposals.
Scheduled from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Altgeld 315, the workshop will cover strategies to enhance external funding success, including developing a research agenda, creating a funding plan, recruiting mentors and collaborators, writing competitive proposals and responding to reviews.
This workshop is geared to new faculty and to more senior faculty who might be switching to a new line of research or who have taken a break from externally funded research.
The format includes lecture, small group activities, and some individual activities; there also will be plenty of time at the end for questions.
Deckard established Academic Research Funding Strategies, a consulting firm that helps faculty compete more successfully for grant funding, in 2010. Previously, she worked in research development at Texas A&M for 8 years, most recently serving as associate director of the university’s Office of Proposal Development. She also directed the university’s New Faculty Initiative, helping new faculty to jump-start their research by helping them to identify funding opportunities, develop a strategy for pursuing funding, and learn to write competitive proposals.
This will be Deckard’s third presentation at NIU. She is exceptionally knowledgeable, and presents in an engaging and comfortable manner.
The workshop is free for NIU faculty; reservations are due by noon Friday, Nov. 6, to at ccradduc@niu.edu. Space is limited, and RSVPs will granted on a first-come, first-served basis. To take advantage of the group activities, bring a laptop/tablet or a notepad and pen/pencil.
