With the new community center’s water and electrical lines laid and the foundation poured, things are looking up – literally! The concrete wall panels, fabricated by DuKane Precast in Aurora, arrived Wednesday and are in the process of being lifted and placed by a giant crane rented from O’Donnell Crane Services of Cortland. Once positioned, the panels are welded into place at key points where steel beams have been encased in the concrete foundation and panels.
In all, 116 panels of varying heights will be placed around the perimeter of the building – the largest weighing 22 tons. The exterior walls will be painted on site at a later time. Construction manager, Ringland Johnson, anticipates that the building will be sealed by August so work can continue inside despite the weather conditions. Sycamore Park District Board of Commissioners Vice President, Michelle Schulz is excited to see the project taking shape and adds, “We’ve been planning for years to reach this milestone! The Board, staff, volunteer committees and Leaf a Legacy donors have given so much to this project. To see it coming to fruition and within 10 months of opening is truly something special to be a part of. It’s a great community effort!”
The District’s fundraising campaign, Leaf a Legacy, is also soaring! It is within $35,000 of its $1 million goal. Executive Director Daniel Gibble says, “This is a very exciting project to be a part of and the Board and staff are proud to share its legacy with everyone who has donated so far. Individual giving has played a big role in the success of this campaign. Our residents and local businesses continue to be extremely generous and we can’t wait to hit the $1 million mark so we can all celebrate together – and so I can finally shave me head!”

This site represents four of the seven projects that make up ACTION 2020, the Sycamore Park District’s long-range plan to provide residents with the recreational opportunities they seek, need and deserve. In addition to a community center, splashpad, dog park and sled hill, other ACTION 2020 projects will bring two new biking trail connections, a soccer complex followed by six new baseball fields and a new irrigation system at the Sycamore Park District Golf Club.

Still waiting for the park in Reston Ponds that was suppose to be built over 10 years ago.
