Observations and comments about state government by State Representative Robert W. Pritchard.
A task force created by the legislature in 2009 has issued the most comprehensive survey to date of best practices in our schools to save energy, water and money. According to the report, the hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings can be reinvested in teachers, technology and textbooks.
The best practices of 259 schools ranged from operations and maintenance to retrofits, curriculum, recycling and renewable energy. The report also listed funding sources, expert contacts and background resources. In all of the communities, someone was motivated to lead the efforts to green-up their school. In some areas a teacher led the efforts while in other areas a school staff member, parent, student or just an interested resident was responsible. This idea makes a lot of sense. I hope it is applied by public and private organizations nationally. We are a very wasteful society and that needs to change.
