Go beyond the city limits into the countryside and see for yourself how farms are sustainable. Two local farms are opening their farm gates for a Farm & Food Field Trip on Saturday, July 22.
The Farm & Food Field Trip starts at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau in Sycamore where people will meet and travel via a motor coach to the Jones and Sanderson farms near Clare. The morning tour departs at 8:30 a.m. from Farm Bureau and returns by 1:30 p.m. The afternoon tour departs at 11:30 a.m. and returns by 4:30 p.m.
The Field Trip allows city people to interact with farmers, compare organic and conventional food production, learn about animal welfare, ask questions about GMOs and pesticides, and discover how technology impacts sustainability.
Tracy Jones will showcase his cattle and grain farm with group tours. Visitors will see animal care in the beef feedlot setting, crop production technology, farm machinery and grain handling. Participants will also learn the impact of GPS, fertilizers, pesticides, and biotechnology on farm sustainability.
A few miles away, three generations of Sanderson’s ─ Gerry, sons Dan and Dale, and grandsons Trent and Kurt ─ will show their varied facets of farm stewardship. This tour features cover crops, organic and conventional crop production methods, and machinery technology.
A farm-style lunch featuring Illinois-grown foods will be provided at noon.

There is a $10 per person registration fee to participate in the Field Trip, payable in advance at Farm Bureau. The Field Trip is open to local persons ages 12 and up.
