Nell Duke
Nell Duke, professor of language, literacy and culture at the University of Michigan, will visit the NIU campus Monday, March 16, to deliver a lecture on “Aligning Effective Informational Text Instruction with the Common Core Standards.”
Her talk begins at 6 p.m. in the Sky Room of the Holmes Student Center, followed by a Q-and-A from 7 to 7:30 p.m. A reception with light refreshments begins at 5:30 p.m.
Duke’s work focuses on early literacy development, particularly among children living in poverty. Her specific areas of expertise include development of informational reading and writing in young children; comprehension development and instruction in early schooling; and issues of equity in literacy education.
The recipient of the American Educational Research Association’s Early Career Award currently serves as co-principal investigator on projects funded by the Institute of Education Sciences, the National Science Foundation and the Spencer Foundation.
She received her doctoral degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Education.
