On Friday, the Secretary of State Jesse White announced that because of the COVID-19 pandemic and closing of the Illinois SOS Offices, an emergency rule will extend the expiration dates on Illinois driver’s licenses, ID cards, FOID cards, and vehicle registrations until at least 90 days after State Driver Services facilities reopen.
For Illinois residences that have expired or soon to expire driver’s licences or auto tags (see above), no notices have been mailed to notify people as this advanced mailing was also cancelled due to the SOS offices being closed.
Update on those individuals that missed the information on the State Real ID for travel that was going to end on October 1, 2020, this has been extended as well. Current Illinois driver’s licenses or ID cards will continue to be accepted at airports, military bases and secure federal facilities until Oct. 1, 2021.
All Secretary of State facilities in the state of Illinois have been closed to the public since March 17. Currently, these offices are not scheduled to reopen until May 1. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order is set to lift on May 1, but his mandate may change and continue on into May with a new deadline set. Jesse White will announce the confirmed date of opening when officially announced.
