The Flick by Annie Baker
October 3-7, 2018
NIU Stevens Building, Black Box Theater
Avery, Sam, and Rose, who tend to one of the last 35-millimeter film projectors in the country, go through the motions of the every-day mundane tasks needed to keep the theater running. While they clean spilled popcorn and soda from the theater floors, their relationships bloom in the deserted aisles.
The outside world creeps into the protective walls of the theater as the employees endure low wages and low hopes for the future. They connect because of who they are, who they wish to be, and who society will never let them become.
In a fast-changing world such as ours, we humans long for genuine connection. The Flick offers a funny and heart-wrenching look at the seemingly insignificant moments and conversations that shape who we become.
