NIU student group Mortar Board, in collaboration with the Honors Program, and the Women’s Resource Center are joining forces to collect gowns for the second annual “Project Prom.” The gown and accessories collection is happening now and is ongoing until Feb. 17 at 4 p.m.
On Feb. 19 and 20, from 1 to 5 p.m., NIU students will transform Conexión Comunidad, 637 North 11th Street in DeKalb, into a dress boutique and invite all area high school girls to come and select formal gowns for free. The event is open to all girls in DeKalb County and surrounding areas. The purpose of the project is to ensure that even in tough economic times, every girl has a chance to go to Prom in a dress that makes her feel beautiful.
This marks the second time campus groups have combined for Project Prom. Last year, NIU students collected more than 300 gowns and gave them away during a one-day event open to all local high school girls.
Organizers are currently accepting donations of gowns or formal jewelry, handbags and shoes from now until Feb. 26. You can drop them off at the following locations between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday:
• NIU Honors Program, Campus Life 110, corner of Lucinda and Normal at NIU
• Women’s Resource Center, 105 Normal Road, DeKalb (at the corner of Lincoln Highway and Normal Road)
Those wishing to attend Project Prom 2011 should save the date:
Saturday, Feb. 19, 1 to 5 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 20, 1 to 5 p.m.
