During the week of October 6, NIU’s College of Business will host its 4th annual ethics education event now entitled “BELIEF Week.” This event is five days of events and activities on campus geared at building ethical awareness. During the week, many alumni and corporate representatives come to campus as guest speakers to make presentations in business classes that reflect ethical dilemmas they may have been faced with and/or had to overcome. The speakers have played a huge part in bringing real life experience into the classroom. This year, the featured keynote speaker will be Beth Reese, President of Nicor Gas and Senior Vice-President of AGL Resources. She will address students, faculty and staff on “Appreciating Your Ethical Grounding” on Wednesday, October 8 at 6:30 p.m. in Barsema Hall. This address is free and open to the public.
BELIEF Week is developed and managed by Dr. William McCoy, Director of the BELIEF (Building Ethical Leaders using an Integrated Ethics Framework) Program, which was launched in 2006. “Teaching ethics in our classrooms mean students can actively demonstrate ethical knowledge in the workplace, thus building ethical leaders” says Dr. McCoy. “BELIEF Week enhances our positioning statement of bringing classroom learnings to the business world.” In addition, student-led activities will occur during the week, further strengthening the foundation of professional ethical behavior. These activities will be run by the student organization – LEAD (Leaders in Ethics and Academic Discipline).
The BELIEF Program, which is funded almost exclusively by donor contributions, has a history of ranking in Business Week’s top three in Ethics: 2nd in 2010, 3rd in 2011, 2nd in 2012 and 3rd in 2013. For more information on how you can partner with or support the BELIEF Program, contact Dr. William McCoy.
