The Sycamore Park District, DeKalb County History Center, and Ellwood House Museum are thrilled to announce they have been awarded a $2,000 Day of Racial Healing Grant to support a new countywide partnership project, Branches of Belonging.
Branches of Belonging invites individuals, organizations, and businesses to show their support for a welcoming and inclusive community where every person feels a true sense of belonging. Beginning this spring, the Branches of Belonging symbol will appear in storefronts of businesses and organizations that have signed the partnership pledge—a commitment to creating public spaces that prioritize acceptance and inclusion. Decals, pins, and other items will also be available for individuals who wish to show their support.
This initiative grew from an ongoing community conversation about belonging in DeKalb County, sparked by the Arts in Action art exhibit and the Dessert and Dialogue program series.
On February 5, representatives from the partnering agencies invite business owners, community leaders, and organizational leaders to learn more about how these programs have impacted the community and how Branches of Belonging turns conversation into action. Those interested in attending are encouraged to email Sarah Rex at sarahr@sycparks.org.
The National Day of Racial Healing, recognized on January 20, focuses on healing through narrative, dialogue, and place, and builds on a national movement for racial justice and equity. This work aligns with the National Recreation and Park Association’s belief that parks and recreation agencies play a vital role in providing equitable, inclusive spaces that foster connection and belonging. The DeKalb County History Center and Ellwood House Museum further support this mission through programming that facilitates community dialogue about what belonging means in DeKalb County, helping to strengthen understanding and relationships.
The National Day of Racial Healing is supported by grants from organizations including the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and is advanced through partnerships with community-serving organizations such as the National Recreation and Park Association.
