Richard Schmack, DeKalb County State’s Attorney, announced that a DeKalb County jury yesterday returned verdicts of guilty on all twelve counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual of a Child against Ival Miles.
The victim, now an adult, is a female child previously known to the defendant, and was under the age of thirteen at the time of the repeated offenses from 2003 to 2005. The case was investigated and brought to the State’s Attorney by the detectives from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department. This successful prosecution would not have been possible without their efforts.
First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein and Assistant State’s Attorney Alicia Caplan presented the case to the jury over a three day trial. The jury deliberated approximately two hours before returning their unanimous verdict.
Sentencing will take place on April 26, 2016. Each of the twelve counts is a non-probational Class X felony punishable by six to thirty years to be served at 85%. Consecutive sentences are mandatory for this offense, so the minimum sentence for the 71 year old Miles is 72 years imprisonment.
Mr. Schmack thanked both the prosecutors and the police for their excellent work in bringing this offender to justice and for their advocacy on behalf of victim. He also praised the victim and other witnesses for their willingness to come forward and testify under difficult circumstances.
