Choice, who has worked in the Illinois Community College system for over 30 years, assumed his current position as President in April 2007, after having served as Vice President of Career/Transfer Instruction for 6 years. “The College has grown and changed over its long history and I feel blessed to have been here to see a number of those changes in the last 14 years that have improved the Kishwaukee College experience for both students and employees,” he said.
Prior to coming to Kishwaukee College, Dr. Choice served at William Rainey Harper College since 1985 in various positions.
Kishwaukee has seen several lasting accomplishments under President Choice’s leadership. Most notably the passing of the 2009 referendum with 64% approval, that included the addition of two new buildings, the Student Center and Campus Operations, and renovations to the Yvonne A. Johnson Science Wing and the Terry & Sherrie Martin Health Career Wings.
During his tenure, the College created new academic programs, including Aviation and Esthetics, initiated an Honors Program, expanded dual credit options with area high schools, and experienced a significant enrollment increase of 37% in annual duplicated headcount.
At the state level, Dr. Choice has been an active member of the Illinois Council of Community College Presidents, having just finished his term as president. He recently received the 2015 Illinois Community College Trustees Association Advocacy Award for his dedicated leadership in advocating for the needs of students and the Illinois community college system.
Dr. Choice has raised the awareness of the College by being active in the community, serving on the River Valley Workforce Investment Board, KishHealth System Board of Directors, Kishwaukee Education Consortium Governing Board, DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation Executive Committee, and Ben Gordon Center Board of Directors.
The Board of Trustees reluctantly accepted Dr. Choice’s resignation at Tuesday’s regularly scheduled board meeting. “We appreciate Tom’s 14 years of service to Kishwaukee College and the over 30 years to the community college system,” said Bob Johnson, Chair of the Kishwaukee College Board of Trustees. “We wish him luck in all his future endeavors and appreciate his willingness to help the College through the search process that will begin fairly quickly.”
