The Kishwaukee College Horticulture department will be hosting a Garden Open House for the public to view this year’s gardens on Thursday, August 27 from 1 – 3:00p.m. Staff will be available to answer questions about the various plants and design. Light refreshments will be available. The Garden Open House is free and open to the public.
B.J. Miller, Greenhouse/Garden Technician at the College, stated, “Many of our displays are in full bloom right now so we wanted to give the public an opportunity to come to campus and enjoy a walk through our gardens!”
Kishwaukee College’s 120-acre campus has several unique displays. The greenhouse staff design, grow, install, and maintain the display and instructional gardens on the campus. The staff will be highlighting their All-America Selections Display Garden. As an A.A.S Display site, Miller plants varieties with the A.A.S. designation, which is determined by rigorous criteria in the trial phase and chosen based on the plant’s exceptional characteristics. Kishwaukee College’s 2015 A.A.S Garden design is being entered into the annual A.A.S. Display Garden Design Contest under the theme of “Garden Geometry.”
Miller explained, “This year our A.A.S Gardens were designed to illustrate geometric angles and shapes using a living display of flowers. It was a lot of fun to combine math concepts with gardening.” Photos of the design will be submitted to A.A.S in September for entry into the contest.
In addition to the A.A.S Gardens, the campus has a vegetable garden planted and maintained by students in HOR 201, Sustainable Fruit and Vegetable Production; a demonstration prairie; and a trial garden for new varieties. There is also a bluebird house trail, a fountain seating area, and a variety of uniquely displayed hardscape, all of which were installed by students.
